If you are an LPN and looking into taking the next step – or even if you’re not yet an LPN and want to chart your career course now – here are programs to help bridge the way to becoming a Registered Nurse.
Hospitals used to have on-the-job training diploma programs, but now most people become registered nurses by getting a Bachelor of Science in Nursing over four years. You may have to pass the National League for Nursing Exam before being accepted into a program, and once you graduate, you have to take the NCLEX-RN exam to become a registered nurse. If you’ve already become an LPN, you’ve got less work ahead of you and will probably only need a year to complete the required coursework.
There are so many more options and opportunities available to RNs that no LPN has a chance at, so to keep your career moving forward, becoming an RN is the way to go. Transition programs prepare LPNs to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses exam, which is required to become an RN.
But, first you have to qualify to get into a transition program. You will need to have graduated from a State Board approved nursing program, submit an official transcript of required courses, and possibly interview before being accepted. Be sure to keep in contact with the school to make sure you are meeting all their requirements by the deadlines.
Many online colleges offer LPN to RN transition programs that work with your current schedule, making it possible for current full-time nurses to pursue further education.
Chamberlain College of Nursing is one of the few online colleges that offer a specific LPN to RN Bridge program – their associate degree in nursing with an LPN to RN bridge option is great for someone just starting out in nursing.
Indiana State University offers an LPN to BSN degree that doesn’t require any time in a classroom for students to earn their NLNAC-accredited Bachelor of Science in nursing. Clinical hours are completed locally with a preceptor.
